All Star Superman - 2011

While saving the crew of the first manned mission to the sun, Superman is poisoned by solar radiation. Dying, he decides to fulfill his lifelong dreams, while still saving the Earth from various threats. But when Lex Luthor reveals his latest plot to control the world, Superman must use his remaining strength to stop him.

Lex Luthor, genius supervillain, concocts a master plan which basically kills Superman from the inside as he tricks him into absorbing so much solar energy that his cells themselves are literally(lit-trally!) bursting at their seems. Understanding that his days are numbered, superman takes cares of his final desires. He reveals to Lois his true identity, and he also creates a serum to give Lois his superpowers for 24hrs without any of his known weaknesses. even going so far as to design a suit for her, in his final declaration of love.

D'awwww

Kent shows up to interview Lex in the prison and a riot breaks out when the super villain Parasite breaks free.
Lex is trying to keep Clark alive during the riot so that he can tell Lex's Story, That he killed Superman with solar energy. Superman faces Lex and challenges him to do good, but somehow Lex steals the super serum and gains his powers for 24hrs. This sets the stage for Superman's final fight, and one we've been waiting a long time to see. Lex stomps him out, but Superman eventually stops him and saves the planet at the end.

My questions to the people involved in this film:
Why the fuck would there even be a "manned mission to the Sun?"
Why would they house both the super villains and the regular human criminals in the same prison?
Why even include the "New Krypton" side plot?
Why would Metallo lift weights in a jail for super villains? He's a fucking robot, man!
Seriously, what's the fucking point?!

I keep saying this, but I am a fan of the older narrative in these films.  Jimmy Olsen apparently crossdresses, They actually referenced/acknowledged the fact that Clark and Lois cannot have kids and they even went so far as to show Lex's execution in prison.

I can dig it.

The Waterboy - 1998

Does anyone remember when Adam Sandler wasn't phoning it in? This was made during Sandler's "I can do any nonsense movie but I still care" phase. After watching it again, I realize that not only did he go full retard, he was fucking cats up when he was pissed.

Quick hits #9

Flick's Quick Hits - Rapid fire reviews and thoughts on a few movies at once.
Featuring: Portlandia, Samurai Champloo, Damages, and Sons of Tuscon

Portlandia (2011) - SNL's Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein start in this sketch comedy is basically centered on portland and all it's hipsterish activities and citizens. it's funny in spurts.

Out of five? 3.5

Samurai Champloo (2004) - An Anime set during samurai era japan and overlayed with hip hop beats. Mugen and jin are swordmasters who basically are stopped from killing each other by fuu, who recruits them in the search for her father.
Eh. Not a bad anime. If you're into swordplay and/or the samurai era, this may interest you.
Out of 5? 3.5
There is a lull between action scenes, but when it's time to fight, shit gets real.

Damages (2007) - Unscrupulous lawyer drama. Glenn close plays patty hewes, a no nonsense attorney specializing in corporate fraud, who will do whatever it takes to get money back to the people who were cheated out of it. She's a master manipulator. Expect a lot of mental chess and the desperate CEOs will do whatever it takes to keep their money. So expect deaths too.
Out of 5? 4.
Dramas bore me a bit, but this one was okay. Story jumps back and forth through time both giving and taking information. Kept me engrossed.

Sons of Tuscon (2010) - Canceled after 4 episodes, Sons of Tuscon is actually a pretty funny series with a basic premise. After their father is jailed, for securities fraud, 3 young kids set out to find a guy to poise as their father. They find Ron, an adult slacker in need of a home + money and more they're a family.

I'm not afraid to say that this was one of the shows I slept on when it aired, but it was canceled after 4 episodes. Neither Tuscon nor I had a chance to connect. Then I found it on Netflix.

Attack The Block - 2011

A teen gang in South London defend their block from an alien invasion.

After mugging a woman, something drops from the sky and they chase out down and kill it. little do they know, there's a lot more on the way. They bring the alien to a guy who is a dealer. Looking to leave it there for the night. He speaks to the drug lord Hi-Hatz, (Sigh) who is a 50Cent look-alike (Double Sigh) and actually gets a promotion to dealer.

50 Quid.

After witnessing more drop from the sky in clusters, the gang sets out to hunt and kill. They head back to their apartments to arm up and it's on. Until they actually see what they are up against, and instinctively bitch out. Running away, The Leader Moses, is caught by the police as he has been identified by the lady he mugged earlier. The Police van is attacked by the aliens and the kids make an effort to rescue their leader.

Mid-Movie Thought:
"I don't get the hype surrounding this film. yes, it had its moments, but overall it kinda sucks. One of the kids has a vespa. How tough can you be with a Vespa Scooter?"

Seriously?

They end up running through the streets in an attempt to get back home and one of them gets bitten for his trouble. Back in their building, they conveniently run into their victim from earlier and force their way into her apartment. She's a nurse named Sam, and they force her to help. The aliens get into the complex and track them to Sam's apartment where Moses actually proves he's a tough guy by taking one out via samurai sword.

It is suggested that the aliens are after the group because they killed the initial alien. We get some heavy handed message about how "actions have consequences." Bleh. Fifty Quid, shows up pops off a few rounds and gets trapped in an elevator with one of the creatures. True to his American Namesake, he somehow manages to survive.

The boys form a plan to head back to the Penthouse as they believe it is the safest place. (When they make it, they are ambushed by Fifty Quid who's luck runs out as he is devoured by no less than 6 of the monsters, right after giving the standard evil monologue.) Under UV light, it is shown that Moses is covered in what appears to be some type of alien fluid and they have been tracking him by that. He decides to play the hero again, and says that he intends to lead them into a trap and blow then up, finishing what he started.

He apologizes to Sam for mugging her and heads out to atone for his misdeeds. Then the film attempts to humanize him or garner some sympathy as he sets his plan in motion. He succeeds and the cops show up at the end and arrest everyone in sight. Moses will be forever remembered as a the hero who saved the planet, and as he's driven away, everyone is on their feet and chanting his name.

Stray Quotage:

-"Have you got a boyfriend?"
     "Yes."
"Are you sure about that, because he isn't looking out for you tonight."

-"You gotta fix my leg. I need it for running from those things!"

"Please keep me out of your gang warfare bullshit!"
"Lady, This has nothing to do with gangs...or rap music, or drugs or violence in video games."

-"We gotta kill them, we gotta catch them all"
     "Calm down, this isn't pokemon"

Pest, had to be the funniest character in this film. All the above lines came from him.

Attack The Block was insanely overhyped. I just didn't think it was that good or coherent. Idk. Initially, I got drunk and fell asleep on this film, but not before I was able to see that it looked lame.  I did get to the end the 2nd time around, but I don't feel like I missed anything the first time.

Retro Review: Conan The Barbarian - 1982

Sigh. This movie is beyond clunky

If you haven't seen this movie by now, all you need to understand is that the movie is about 2 hours too long. and in those two hours, you will see about 1hr of Ahnold wearing a loin cloth and fucking shit up, and about another hour of needless drama.

You know how I know he's a barbarian? Only barbarians would punch out camels.

I guess it was better in it's day, but I don't feel like it holds up well at all. The writing is ridiculous and there's an unnecessary amount of dialogue between action scenes and that forces this flick to get way too boring too quickly. At the time, Arnold wasn't good for talking. And let's face it, the movie was to showcase his awesome physique. So then why the long running time? Could he not have fucked shit up in 90minutes?

Anyway, with all that being said, I'm not going to rate the film. I realize that it was made in a different time. So it would be unfair to compare it to any more recent film, excluding the 2011 Remake. I might do that later.

Now, for no good reason, here's a pic of James Earl Jones as Thulsa Doom. The Evil Snake Barbarian Warlord.
"James, we just came up with some new lines for yo- oh, nevermind."

Violence? He's a fucking barbarian
Explosions? No
Nudity? The women of that time only believed in orgies and being topless when they weren't in an orgy.

Eagle Eye - 2008

Jerry and Rachel are two strangers thrown together by a mysterious phone call from a woman they have never met. Threatening their lives and family, she pushes Jerry and Rachel into a series of increasingly dangerous situations, using the technology of everyday life to track and control their every move. - IMDB

You know something, once upon a time, I actually liked Shia Lebouf. I used to watch Even Stevens, I enjoyed Disturbia, and I thought he was a pretty funny dude. Then I saw Eagle Eye and then I said, "That's Enough Lebouf!"

If you can't tell by the look on his face and that stupid mustache he sports in the poster, Eagle Eye was pretty bad. I want to say that there were some redeeming qualities, but, I can't. Don't get me wrong, Its not the worst movie I've seen, --doesn't even crack the top 20-- but it was pretty bad and probably could have been much better. I suggest that you watch at your own peril.

Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever - 2002

Jonathan Ecks, an FBI agent, realizes that he must join with his lifelong enemy, Agent Sever, a rogue DIA agent with whom he is in mortal combat, in order to defeat a common enemy. That enemy has developed a "micro-device" that can be injected into victims in order to kill them at will.

I'm not going to point out how much this movie sucked, that'd be me beating a dead horse, but I will say that it is a good film for testing out your surround sound capabilities. There is a lot of gunfire in this film, from both small and large guns and the ricochet of the bullets and the falling shells are a treat to home theater fans.

And now, for no other reason, here are pictures of Lucy Liu. Enjoy!

Ticked off Trannies With Knives - 2010

A group of trannies are violently bashed and left for dead. The surviving ladies regain consciousness, confidence, and courage ready to seek out revenge on the ones who attacked them.

Ticked off trannies with knives is exactly that. They are transsexual, pissed, and they have knives.

A group of trannies are violently bashed and left for dead. The surviving ladies regain consciousness, confidence, and courage ready to seek out revenge on the ones who attacked them.

Shot exploitation style, the film at its essence serves as an LGBTQ empowerment film. In this case, transsexuals specifically and it calls back to the days of the Grindhouse film era. One thing people continue to forget about transsexuals, is that no matter how feminine they appear, they are still dudes, and they will knock you on your ass if they have to.

This is not my preferred genre, but I'm pretty opened minded with odd films and above all else, it wasn't terrible. There's a cast and crew dance party at the end of the film. Good stuff. I enjoy movies a bit more when it looks like everyone involved genuinely had fun making it.

Half Light - 2006

Rachel Carlson, a successful novelist moves to a small Scottish village to move on with her life after the death of her son. Strange things start to happen when she is haunted by ghosts and real life terror.

The movie begins after a small child plays narcissus and drowns himself. Not only was there multiple things to grab on to, dude somehow ends up under the canoe! Rachel blames herself because not only did not make time to play with him when he asked she also left the gate open.

8 months later, she moves into a house on a remote seaside island to get away from it all and continue her work.

Demi Moore is a hot older woman....Hairline is receding though.

A psychic tells Rachel that her son is waiting for her. After that, it doesn't take long before freaky shit starts happening. At one point, she sees her dead son and he says "you should be with me" and tries to drown her. She wakes from that dream only to see her son again as he immediately tries to choke her out. She wakes from that dream, understandably freaked, and nothing's there.

Along the way, Rachel meets and eventually falls for a guy. After a while, it is revealed that that man has been dead for 7 years. Is he really dead? Just what the hell is going on? This is when the movie picks up, but it keeps the eerie supernatural vibe established throughout the film.

Demi sure loves her ghosts, doesn't she?

Stray Quotage:

"Mary, have you seen Angus McCulloch?"
"Umm, no. I haven't seen him in 7 years, and neither have you... because he's dead."

I chuckled.

Big Stan - 2007

So what would you do if you had 6 months before you entered prison? If your answer was "Learn Karate," or "Prevent Ass-Rape" you may like this flick.

Rob Schneider stars as Stan, a crooked real estate broker who is caught and given time in prison. With the help of an equally crooked lawyer, he gets six months before his sentence and he decides to learn martial arts
as a way to protect himself. After a while, Stan runs the prison and that is when/where the funniest bits occur.

David carradine plays "the master" the guy who teaches Stan kung fu. The thing is, under any other circumstances, seeing Rob schneider beat up Bob Sapp would be ridiculous. Within the scope of this film, it works.

Big Stan is funny and it has its moments. It premiered direct to DVD and I think that was the best way to go. Rob Schneider fans will love this. David Carradine fans will enjoy it, and everyone else may not.

Nudity? Probably. I might have blocked it out. It is a prison comedy

Equilibrium - 2002

In a futuristic world, a strict regime has eliminated war by suppressing emotions: books, art and music are strictly forbidden and feeling is a crime punishable by death. Cleric John Preston (Bale) is a top ranking government agent responsible for destroying those who resist the rules. Whe he misses a dose of Prozium, a mind-altering drug that hinders emotion, Preston, who has been trained to enforce the strict laws of the new regime, suddenly becomes the only person capable of overthrowing it.

This movie is like a version of George Orwell's 1984 and it is easy to tell that is the work that inspired this  flick. The government seeks to eliminate all emotions, as that seems to be the basis of all of mankind's ills. In order to do so, they've created a drug that renders people emotionless and they've issued orders to burn anything that may illicit an emotional response.

Although the film has two credible lead actors, the star of this flick by far, is the fighting technique known as Gun Kata. Undoubtedly, this alone adds a new layer of badassness to the movie. Bale plays it straight as a government agent who after missing a dosage, feels emotions, makes the predictable turn and joins the good guys. Taye as the second in command, becomes his main opposition (besides the gov't) after he turns good.

As the movie goes on, Bale's badass is revealed. Gun battles, Gun Kata, sword fights, he does it all. Overall, once it get's going, Equilibrium is a pretty good movie. It bombed when it was released initially, but I chalk that up to bad timing. It has found something of a second life on DVD as a cult fave.

Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths - 2010

A good version of Lex Luthor from a parallel Earth comes to our Justice League's Earth looking for help to fight their evil counterparts.

A parallel version of Lex Luthor travels to our planet to seek the help of the Justice League in order to save his. Not being as arrogant as his team mates, batman stays behind to manage their own planet and to mind his own damn business. Once in Lex's universe, The Justice League does battle with The Crime Syndicate, an alternate, evil version of themselves.

The Crime Syndicate

By the end, it is revealed that Owlman is every bit a BAMF as Batman, except he is insane and it is his plan to blow up Earth Prime, this eliminating all life in every universe. He basically subscribes to the "Kill 'em all, and let God sort Them Out" principle of villainy. The final sequence comes down to the fight I was most looking forward to, Batman vs. Owlman. Owlman is physically stronger and despite being outmatched, Batman uses his cunning and saves the day. In addition to killing owl man, he kills Johnny Quick(the evil flash) as well, tricking him into vibrating so fast that he ages rapidly.

He's The Goddamn Batman!

In conclusion, don't fuck with Batman. He doesnt use guns, but he will find a way to kill you if it's necessary or for the greater good.

The "Batman's a Dick" statement of the movie:
"Be careful Aquaman, they're stronger than you are!"

Motherfucker! Who isn't stronger than Aquaman?!

Batman: Under the Red Hood (2010)

Batman faces his ultimate challenge as the mysterious Red Hood takes Gotham City by firestorm. One part vigilante, one part criminal kingpin, Red Hood begins cleaning up Gotham with the efficiency of Batman, but without following the same ethical code. Killing is an option. And when the Joker falls in the balance between the two, hard truths are revealed and old wounds are reopened.

The movie starts with The Joker fucking. Robin. Up. Dude is really giving him the business. Bashing him repeatedly with a crowbar and leaving him to die in a warehouse full of explosives. 5 years later, a mysterious man in a red hood appears and promises the crime families protection from both Batman and the Black Mask, the reigning Crime Lord of Gotham City.

The Red Hood has an elaborate plan to get back at the Joker.
And when it comes together, it's a glorious thing.

After Batman and Nightwing foil a cargo theft, the criminals are assassinated before they can talk and that begins a cool chase through the streets of Gotham. Batman relates that There's been many people who have donned the Red Hood persona, yet none have been as deadly as this Red Hood, is not afraid to kill if the situation calls for it. He seems to be a real good match for Batman and he knows his true identity. Using hits fancy Bat-technology, he discovers that red hood and Jason Todd, the robin that died share the same DNA. 100% match. Batman then digs up his body and confirms that there was a fake in it's place. The bodies had been switched at some point.

The "Batman's a Dick" scene of the film:
"You say you want to be better than me, but not like this!"
(Said immediately before face punching Red Hood through a brick wall)

I'm going to go ahead and say outright that this is one of the best animated Batman films that I have seen. While giving you the background of Black Mask, Red Hood and a lil bit of Nightwing, the film also covers how well prepared everyone involved with batman is and how they to be awesome. The central theme was the eventual confrontation between Batman and Red Hood, and no matter how much they had going on in this film, everything introduced related to, and they never strayed from the plot.

Under the Red Hood is a very well animated film. I like the darker direction these animated films are going lately. Especially as it relates to Batman.

The Dead - 2010

When the last evacuation flight out of war-torn Africa crashes off the coast, American Air Force Engineer Lieutenant Brian Murphy emerges as the sole survivor in a land where the dead are returning to life and attacking the living.

This movie spent more time watching me than the other way around.

The acting is terrible. (It's like everyone is doing their best African Vin Diesel impression) and for a movie about zombies in Africa, you'd think they'd have enough bodies, to not have to kill the same zombie 3 or 4 times.

Hungry Hungry Africans

This has to be one of the worst zombie films that I've tried to watch. It absolutely has to be, and I've seen a lot of Romero films. Smh. To its credit, I managed to get through about 30 minutes. That's 15 minutes longer than I gave Zombie Strippers, so I guess it wasn't that bad.

I refuse to watch the rest of this film, so out of fairness, I won't give it an official score. But fuck everything about this film.

(Unofficial) Out of Ten? 2

Rating scale

I've told a few people about this site and every now and then, I seek out their opinions. I'm always open to constructive criticism, and I'm always looking to improve the site. The other day I had a discussion with a very good friend of mine (you can read his blog here) and not in so many words, we came to the conclusion that my scores are inconsistent. [I agree with this to an extent. Based on my own bias' I may score so film higher or lower. Fuck you, I'm human.]

So, thinking about this in my drunken stupor, [Wait, did I mention I was drunk? Because I was. Fuck you, I'm human!] I realized that--while subject to my bias'--  the grades I give are not really inconsistent, it's just that I've never explained what each score really means. So, To clarify things a bit, I've written an explanation of my rating system. I'm hoping to make the grades seem more consistent, and logical.

The Official Flicks'N'Pics Rating Scale:

1-4. The Worst of the worst.
Very rarely will you see any film with this grade. Perfectly acceptable film to rip apart with a group of friends, but otherwise, if you see anything in this range, my suggestion to you is avoid avoid avoid.

5. Barely passing.
Means you can talk about it if it ever comes up in conversation, but you'll never admit to it seeing it otherwise. A 5 is like a decent bad movie with good parts. Just good enough to avoid a 4, still crappy enough to not deserve a 6.

6. Most films get this score. Means it is average. Nothing special, nothing more and nothing less.
The film still has flaws, but you can tell people you watched it and not feel ashamed. These are films to watch if you have nothing better to do or films suitable to watch with a lady because if shit pops off, you won't feel bad if you miss anything.

7. Better than expected and worth recommending, but admittedly, not for everybody. THERE will be something in this film that you will not like or something that you feel will drag down the quality.

8. Way Above average. high quality films with few flaws. Highly Recommendable.
These are the films that most people would give a 10. I judge a bit harsher because I hate when a hyped film doesn't deliver.

9. Better than an 8, but unfortunately doesn't deserve a 10. I don't think I've ever given a nine. Most of the films I rate don't get higher than an 8.

10. Solid film. Excellent all around.and highly recommended.
You'll see an 8 on this site More often than you'll see a 10. I rarely if ever drop a 10. The film has to be damn near perfect.

**Also, for future reference, this list will also be available by clicking the "Ratings Explained" link on the right side of this post.**

National Lampoon's Van Wilder - 2002

I remember when this movie first dropped. I skipped it entirely. I remember how they shit on the "National Lampoons" name by just putting it on every movie, so I thought this would suck by association. Holy Shit, was I wrong.

In this flick, Ryan Reynolds stars as Van Wilder, a man of the people. He needs about 18 credits to graduate, but he loves the college life. After being cut off from his father, Van and his friends decide to raise money so he can stay in school. After being set-up, he comes to the realization that he's been hiding from reality and he can't stay in college forever. What else is there to do but graduate?

Stick It! - 2006

After a run-in with the law, Haley Graham is forced to return to the world from which she fled some years ago. Enrolled in an elite gymnastics program run by the legendary Burt Vickerman, Haley's rebellious attitude gives way to something that just might be called team spirit.

Haley is rebellious for no real or apparent reason. After her last fuck up, she has been court ordered to attend a gymnastics program. That bullshit rehab story ends there. It really is just an excuse to get us into the world of gymnasts. For what it's worth, that world is no joke though. Gymnasts go through hell to perfect their craft, and no lie, I've gained quite a bit of respect for gymnasts.

Gymnasts, short shorts, and very flexible girls. You really  couldn't ask for more, as a guy, you wouldn't care about the plot. Under the guise of "teen empowerment" and "sticking it to the system," this movie is a fetishist's wet dream. Hot flexible teens, feet, short shorts, abs, legs. The only thing missing was schoolgirl outfits.

A Good Old Fashioned Orgy

Jason Sudeikis is Eric, a thirtysomething party animal famous among his close circle of friends for his lavish summer theme parties at his father's swanky Hamptons pad. But when members of the crew start settling down, and Eric's dad announces plans to sell the beach house, Eric decides it's time for one last bash to go out with a proverbial bang—a good old-fashioned orgy. The only obstacles to overcome are actually convincing each of his reluctant friends to join in on the bacchanal, and an inconveniently blossoming romance with the real estate agent threatening to sell the house out from under him before the main event can even take place.

After his father puts his house on the market, Eric tries to put together one last shindig to go out in style. His masterplan? An Orgy. From there, the film takes us from conception and planning to the actual date of. inbetween that, Eric begins to date and fall for his father's realtor, Kate. An act which threatens to derail the event. At one point they went to a sex club and got pointers. There were sex swings. They were being used. (Teehee!)

Ahem. On the night of, nervousness and anxiety takes over as long simmering tensions boil over. the friends begin to bicker and the only people seemingly getting laid are the uninvited married couple. After seeing his dream girl dating another guy that night, he views that as the validation he needs to make the night happen. Drinks are had, and tensions are pushed aside as business picks up. They head to the beach the next morning, and Eric and Kate rekindle their relationship and start anew. Also, the house isn't sold. And they bought a dolphin. (No, not really.)

Overall, the Film is actually much funnier than I thought it would be. It was in my head that the movie would flake out and not deliver, but deliver it did. An orgy scene that wasn't too intimate nor to over the top. It definitely didn't hurt that the ladies were hot.

Stray Quotage:
-"Hmm a size 9 shoe? You know what they say, 'big shoe, big uterus'."
-"I've got work to do in the morning"
-"It's like 8 pm. Relax"
"Well it's morning in Korea. The Koreans makes the Japanese look like Jamaicans"
-"Sorry if I spilled beer on your baby."
-"Thanks doc, you really make the moment more real while talking about how real the moment is while I'm in the middle of the moment."
-"What's up with all the dildoes?"
"Hey, take it easy, those are my friends."

-"He just said, 'your mother is a good woman' as he ejaculated."

Witty banter is always a plus in these films and if you have an oafish guy, he better be funny. Tyler Labine is hilarious.

You see this guy in anything, watch it. He hasn't let me down yet.

I came for an orgy, and got one.  While It would have been nice to have a but more nudity during the orgy scene, I may be asking for too much as  I'm sure the film barely squeaked by with an R. Especially considering its title.
